Nostalgia In No Time

Ok, I already know this is going to be a polarizing post. For some, the idea of making anything with bologna is politely, not on the top of your list. For others, you’ll be right there with me when I say a bologna salad sandwich with white bread takes you immediately to some little stop on memory lane with a side of comfort. The best part is, this bologna salad recipe is super easy to get you to nostalgia in no time.

Making bologna salad is really simple, but the secret is in selecting the right ingredients! So simple and, hopefully, these ingredients are already hanging out in your refrigerator just waiting to be transformed into a delicious sandwich.

What You’ll Need to Make Bologna Salad

  • Bologna – Ultimately, you’re going to chop the bologna up to a grind anyway, but it cannot go in the food processor in a big block. I prefer getting it sliced thick, like you’d use for fried bologna (ah, another sentimental sandwich). Oh, and using ham also not the same… that’s a totally different recipe.
  • Miracle Whip – I’m not getting paid for this recommendation. I looked; I think this magical whip might be considered a spread. I could be general, but if I’m not specific, I’ll steer you in the wrong direction. Bologna salad is just not the same with mayonnaise. Make your bologna salad with Miracle Whip, not mayo.
  • Sweet Pickle Relish – Just like the bologna and whip, you must use the sweet pickle relish. Dill relish is a different flavor, not bad, but for me it’s just slightly off the mark to get to memory lane.

How to Make Bologna Salad

Food processors are amazing! If you don’t have one, and you have the means, please get one. Even a small 3 cup will be life changing. I have had a small processor for years and still love it. It takes the work out of so many recipes.

Quarter the bologna slices and place them in the food processor. Blend the bologna until it’s a ground texture. Don’t process the bologna for too long or you’ll end up with a smooth pate. If the processor is not able to pull in the mix to blend it, you may need to make bologna salad in a few batches.
